On 29 June 2022, Dr. James Thornton attended the World Biodiversity Forum 2022 in Davos, Switzerland on behalf of GEO Mountains. James presented work that was recently conducted by a group of collaborators exploring the distribution of human populations in the world’s mountains

Reliably and transparently quantifying human populations in mountains is important because not only do people rely upon a wide range of mountain ecosystem services, but in many instances are unfortunately responsible for placing valuable mountain ecosystems and biodiversity under pressure. The corresponding paper is expected to appear in the peer-reviewed literature shortly.

Several other interesting presentations were given in the Global Mountain Biodiversity session on topics as diverse as mountain cloud forests, alpine aquatic biodiversity, and mountain biodiversity and conservation reporting in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals. An interesting feature of several presentations was the strong emphasis on methods from the social sciences, such as stakeholder consultation.

More generally, the session provided an opportunity to briefly communicate the scope of GEO Mountains to the mountain biodiversity community, and to invite potential future contributions and collaborations from mountain biodiversity experts.
